The Städel Museum is one of the oldest and most important art museums in Germany. Its holdings comprise 2,700 paintings, 600 sculptures and more than 100,000 works on paper, dating from seven centuries. It was the merchant and banker Johann Friedrich Städel who laid the foundation for this institution – now a museum of international acclaim – through the bequest of his private collection and estate in 1815. This selection of 200 masterworks provides in-depth insight into the Städel’s treasures as well as a survey of the development of European art.
