PHOTOGRAPHY

The Städel Museum’s newest collection focus is on photography, one of the twentieth century’s foremost artistic media. The core of our holdings in this area is formed by a significant group of works of contemporary photography presented to the Städel Museum in 2008 by the DZ BANK. It includes works by Nobuyoshi Araki, Thomas Demand, Andreas Gursky, David Hockney, Candida Höfer, Marie-Jo Lafontaine, Thomas Ruff, Katharina Sieverding, Thomas Struth, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Wolfgang Tillmans, Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol and others.

A further important component is the Wiegand photography collection. Acquired in 2011, these holdings mirror photography’s development in outstanding manner, spanning the history of the medium from its early days to the turn-of-the-century Pictorialist movement and finally the classical modern era. Among the icons of photographic history represented here are Eugène Atget, Brassaï, Julia Margaret Cameron, André Kertész, Heinrich Kühn, Dora Maar, Eadweard Muybridge, Nadar, Man Ray, Erich Salomon, August Sander, Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz.
